From Combat Camera to JetGlow: A Conversation on Ready 4 Pushback

There are moments in aviation where careers, friendships, and purpose all intersect at the same altitude. For me, sitting down with my good friend Ready 4 Pushback host Nik Fialka was one of those moments.

What made the conversation special wasn’t just the aviation talk. It was the history behind it.

Nik has built Ready 4 Pushback into one of the most respected aviation podcasts in the industry. The show was created to help pilots navigate the professional aviation world through mentorship, leadership, interview preparation, and real-world aviation stories. Over the years, the podcast has grown into a major platform for airline pilots, military aviators, aspiring professionals, and aviation leaders looking for authentic conversations about the industry. But before the podcast, before JetGlow, and before the entrepreneurship journey, there were deployments, combat zones, flight lines, cameras, aircraft, and long nights overseas.

Nik and I talked about being together in Djibouti during our military careers. Djibouti is one of those places that changes you. The heat, the dust, the tempo of operations, and the constant movement of aircraft create an environment where you quickly learn what really matters: trust, teamwork, and mission focus. Those deployments create bonds that are hard to explain to people who have never lived it.

Some stories are written with words. Others are written from the back ramp of an aircraft somewhere over the desert.

Long deployments, heavy gear, aircraft, dust, heat, and missions around the world.

What makes the story even better is that during our deployment, neither one of us knew the other was also a pilot. We were both wrapped up in the mission, doing our jobs every day in that deployed environment, never realizing we shared the same passion for aviation outside of it. Years later, seeing where aviation took both of us, Nik building one of the top aviation podcasts in the industry and me launching JetGlow makes the connection even more meaningful.

Chris Hibben JetGlow
Before JetGlow, before the business, before the entrepreneurship… there was a camera, a flight line, and a mission.

During the episode, I shared stories from my career in the United States Air Force Reserve as a combat cameraman with the 4th Combat Camera Squadron. For more than three decades between military service in both the Navy and Air Force Reserve, my job was never just about carrying a camera. It was about documenting history in real time. Combat Camera is one of the few career fields where you can find yourself standing beside special operations teams one day, documenting humanitarian missions the next, and then embedded with aviation units capturing missions from inside the aircraft itself.

People often think combat camera is just photography. It isn’t. It is storytelling under pressure. It is carrying heavy gear through combat zones, flying missions, documenting real-world operations, and preserving moments most people will never see. You learn to move fast, adapt quickly, and pay attention to details because details matter. That mindset stayed with me long after my deployments ended.

And honestly, that mentality became the foundation for JetGlow Aviation. One of the things Nik and I talked about was why I decided to open an aircraft condition maintenance company in the first place. The answer is simple: aviation deserves better. For years I watched aircraft owners and operators struggle with reactive maintenance and inconsistent cosmetic care. Aircraft would get neglected until the condition became impossible to ignore, and then someone would come in aggressively correcting surfaces, removing unnecessary material, and treating aviation finishes like automotive paint. That never sat right with me.

Aircraft are high-value machines operating in harsh environments. Paint, brightwork, windows, interiors, and protective surfaces should be maintained consistently, not abused through repeated heavy correction cycles. That idea became the philosophy behind JetGlow and eventually the development of the JetGlow ORBIT condition maintenance program.

JetGlow was never intended to be “just a detailing company.” It was built around the concept of aircraft condition maintenance. The same mindset I learned in the military applies directly to aviation maintenance today:

  • Stay ahead of problems

  • Document condition

  • Maintain standards

  • Protect the asset

  • Operate with discipline and consistency

Whether we are restoring scratched aircraft windows through JetGlow CLARITY™, polishing brightwork, maintaining ceramic coatings, or performing monthly Orbit maintenance visits, the goal is the same: preserve the aircraft and maintain it to a professional aviation standard.

That conversation with Nik reminded me how connected aviation really is. Military aviation, airline aviation, corporate aviation, maintenance, and entrepreneurship all feed into the same community. The Ready 4 Pushback podcast has become successful because it focuses on authenticity, mentorship, and real stories from aviation professionals. (podcasts.apple.com)

And for me, it was an honor to sit down with a friend I shared deployments with and talk openly about the journey from military service to building JetGlow here in Oshkosh at Wittman Regional Airport.

Because at the end of the day, aviation is not just about airplanes.

It is about the people behind them.
